James L. Hughes letters, 1864-1865.

Letters from 2nd Lieutenant Hughes of the 13th Kentucky Cavalry (CSA), Company C to his wife Eliza; sister; and brother from January 1864 to October 1865. Correspondence details Hughes' time with General Hylan B. Lyon's brigade, his imprisonment in Fort Delaware for several months in 1865 (after his capture on January 15, 1865 probably in Marshall Co., Ala.), and his return home after being released. Hughes' letters include advice to his wife on how to run their farm and handle their slaves.
